WHAT ARE PROBIOTICS FOR DOGS?
Probiotics are live nonpathogenic microorganisms.1Williams N. T. (2010). Probiotics. American journal of health-system pharmacy : AJHP : official journal of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, 67(6), 449–458. https://doi.org/10.2146/ajhp090168 Probiotics for dogs can help in maintaining gut health and the balance of intestinal flora.
Things like antibiotics, dietary intake and certain health issues can contribute to the reduction of healthy intestinal flora which could make you more susceptible to other illnesses.2Normal Flora – Medical Microbiology – NCBI Bookshelf (nih.gov) 3Zhang, L., Zhang, Z., Xu, L., & Zhang, X. (2021). Maintaining the Balance of Intestinal Flora through the Diet: Effective Prevention of Illness. Foods (Basel, Switzerland), 10(10), 2312. https://doi.org/10.3390/foods10102312
WHAT ABOUT PREBIOTICS FOR DOGS?
The difference between a prebiotic and a probiotic is that prebiotics feed the probiotics4Sabater-Molina, M., Larqué, E., Torrella, F., & Zamora, S. (2009). Dietary fructooligosaccharides and potential benefits on health. Journal of physiology and biochemistry, 65(3), 315–328. https://doi.org/10.1007/BF03180584 and the most commonly used prebiotic is nondigestible fructooligosaccharides.5Kechagia M, Basoulis D, Konstantopoulou S, Dimitriadi D, Gyftopoulou K, Skarmoutsou N, Fakiri EM. Health benefits of probiotics: a review. ISRN Nutr. 2013 Jan 2;2013:481651. doi: 10.5402/2013/481651. PMID: 24959545; PMCID: PMC4045285. Health Benefits of Probiotics: A Review – PMC (nih.gov)
What are fructooligosaccharides you ask? They are a type of oligosaccharides that occur in certain foods such as chicory, apples, bananas and whole oats.6Sabater-Molina, M., Larqué, E., Torrella, F., & Zamora, S. (2009). Dietary fructooligosaccharides and potential benefits on health. Journal of physiology and biochemistry, 65(3), 315–328. https://doi.org/10.1007/BF03180584 78 Foods High in Prebiotics and Why You Need Them (webmd.com) 8Roberfroid M. B. (1997). Health benefits of non-digestible oligosaccharides. Advances in experimental medicine and biology, 427, 211–219. https://doi.org/10.1007/978-1-4615-5967-2_22
WHAT DIFFERENT STRAINS OF PROBIOTICS FOR DOGS ARE THERE?
Probiotics are not only strain-specific but their efficacy relies on matching the specific strain to the specific disease or condition.9Sniffen JC, McFarland LV, Evans CT, Goldstein EJC. Choosing an appropriate probiotic product for your patient: An evidence-based practical guide. PLoS One. 2018 Dec 26;13(12):e0209205. doi: 10.1371/journal.pone.0209205. PMID: 30586435; PMCID: PMC6306248. Choosing an appropriate probiotic product for your patient: An evidence-based practical guide – PMC (nih.gov)
The most common strains available today are; the Bifidobacterium species, Enterococcus faecium, the Lactobacillus strains, Saccharomyces boulardii, the Bacillus species, and Pediococcus and they all have different effects based on the specific strain in use.10Probiotics and Their Use in Inflammatory Bowel Disease – PubMed (nih.gov) Amer, M., Nadeem, M., Nazir, S. U. R., Fakhar, M., Abid, F., Ain, Q. U., & Asif, E. (2018). Probiotics and Their Use in Inflammatory Bowel Disease. Alternative therapies in health and medicine, 24(3), 16–23.
There is no exact number of probiotic microorganisms to be ingested but it is thought that billions are needed to adequately colonize your gut microbiota to see beneficial effects.11Williams N. T. (2010). Probiotics. American journal of health-system pharmacy : AJHP : official journal of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, 67(6), 449–458. https://doi.org/10.2146/ajhp090168
WHAT DO THE DIFFERENT STRAINS OF PROBIOTICS FOR DOGS DO?
Certain studies suggest that the Lactobacillus and the Bifidobacterium species of probiotics may be able to replace certain medical therapies.12 Coqueiro, A. Y., Raizel, R., Bonvini, A., Tirapegui, J., & Rogero, M. M. (2019). Probiotics for inflammatory bowel diseases: a promising adjuvant treatment. International journal of food sciences and nutrition, 70(1), 20–29. https://doi.org/10.1080/09637486.2018.1477123
For example, if you have just finished taking certain antibiotics, they can end up wiping out the good gut bacteria in your stomach and the lack of good bacteria can make your stomach susceptible to more gastrointestinal problems or diseases.13Antibiotics Can Kill Healthy Gut Bacteria (healthline.com)
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF PROBIOTICS FOR DOGS AND PREBIOTICS FOR DOGS
CONSTIPATION
Prebiotics for dogs has been found to be helpful in cases of constipation.14Sabater-Molina, M., Larqué, E., Torrella, F., & Zamora, S. (2009). Dietary fructooligosaccharides and potential benefits on health. Journal of physiology and biochemistry, 65(3), 315–328. https://doi.org/10.1007/BF03180584 In fact, prebiotics for dogs can help improve stool consistency and the frequency of bowel movements.15Naseer, M., Poola, S., Uraz, S., & Tahan, V. (2020). Therapeutic Effects of Prebiotics on Constipation: A Schematic Review. Current clinical pharmacology, 15(3), 207–215. https://doi.org/10.2174/1574884715666200212125035
IBD
In one such study on dogs with IBD, VSL#3 was given, which is a probiotic for dogs,
and it was used in comparison with dogs receiving only prednisone and metronidazole combination therapy.
After 60 days of treatment, both the probiotic and combination medication therapy were evaluated, and it was concluded that the probiotics actually caused a significant reduction in certain clinical symptoms that are associated with the IBD.16Rossi, G., Pengo, G., Caldin, M., Palumbo Piccionello, A., Steiner, J. M., Cohen, N. D., Jergens, A. E., & Suchodolski, J. S. (2014). Comparison of microbiological, histological, and immunomodulatory parameters in response to treatment with either combination therapy with prednisone and metronidazole or probiotic VSL#3 strains in dogs with idiopathic inflammatory bowel disease. PloS one, 9(4), e94699. https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0094699

DIARRHEA
L. rhamnosus, L. casei, L. acidophilus, B. bifidum and S. Boulardii17Kechagia M, Basoulis D, Konstantopoulou S, Dimitriadi D, Gyftopoulou K, Skarmoutsou N, Fakiri EM. Health benefits of probiotics: a review. ISRN Nutr. 2013 Jan 2;2013:481651. doi: 10.5402/2013/481651. PMID: 24959545; PMCID: PMC4045285. Health Benefits of Probiotics: A Review – PMC (nih.gov) strains have been found to be beneficial in certain cases of diarrhea.
In fact, studies have shown that the duration of diarrhea is shortened and some of these strains in animal models have shown an inhibitory effect against certain microorganisms known for causing intestinal diseases.18Kechagia M, Basoulis D, Konstantopoulou S, Dimitriadi D, Gyftopoulou K, Skarmoutsou N, Fakiri EM. Health benefits of probiotics: a review. ISRN Nutr. 2013 Jan 2;2013:481651. doi: 10.5402/2013/481651. PMID: 24959545; PMCID: PMC4045285. Health Benefits of Probiotics: A Review – PMC (nih.gov)
ALLERGIES
Probiotics for dogs may be beneficial in cases of food allergies. It has been found that probiotics are capable of immunomodulation.19Castellazzi, A. M., Valsecchi, C., Caimmi, S., Licari, A., Marseglia, A., Leoni, M. C., Caimmi, D., Miraglia del Giudice, M., Leonardi, S., La Rosa, M., & Marseglia, G. L. (2013). Probiotics and food allergy. Italian journal of pediatrics, 39, 47. https://doi.org/10.1186/1824-7288-39-47
What this means is there could potentially be specific strains that are able to alleviate food allergies by repairing the gut flora and balancing altered microbiota.20Nermes, M., Salminen, S., & Isolauri, E. (2013). Is there a role for probiotics in the prevention or treatment of food allergy?. Current allergy and asthma reports, 13(6), 622–630. https://doi.org/10.1007/s11882-013-0381-9
Lactobacillus or Bifidobacterium probiotics have been used in humans and reported as having beneficial effects on gut inflammation, hypersensitive reactions and gut mucosal disfunction.21Isolauri, E., Salminen, S., & Nutrition, Allergy, Mucosal Immunology, and Intestinal Microbiota (NAMI) Research Group Report (2008). Probiotics: use in allergic disorders: a Nutrition, Allergy, Mucosal Immunology, and Intestinal Microbiota (NAMI) Research Group Report. Journal of clinical gastroenterology, 42 Suppl 2, S91–S96. https://doi.org/10.1097/MCG.0b013e3181639a98
Further research is needed as there is some conflicting evidence.
I personally use
which contains digestive enzymes, probiotics and prebiotics like fructooligosaccharides and also papain and bromelain which are supposed to ease stomach inflammation and pain.
I also give my little girl organic kefir and yogurt and check the strains that are in there before giving it to her.
PRECAUTIONS WITH PROBIOTICS FOR DOGS
As with anything there are always some risks and the potential for adverse reactions. Usually, digestive upset is the most common symptom.22Doron S, Snydman DR. Risk and safety of probiotics. Clin Infect Dis. 2015 May 15;60 Suppl 2(Suppl 2):S129-34. doi: 10.1093/cid/civ085. PMID: 25922398; PMCID: PMC4490230. Risk and Safety of Probiotics – PMC (nih.gov)
There are certain bacteria not found in the gut of humans like Lactobacillus bulgaricus, Streptococcus thermophilus and Lactococcus species.23Zawistowska-Rojek A, Tyski S. Are Probiotic Really Safe for Humans? Pol J Microbiol. 2018;67(3):251-258. doi: 10.21307/pjm-2018-044. PMID: 30451441; PMCID: PMC7256845. Are Probiotic Really Safe for Humans? – PMC (nih.gov) The species of lactobacilli, Bifidobacterium, lactococci are GRAS or generally recognized as safe.
However streptococci, enterococci, Bacillus and other spore-forming bacteria, do not possess GRAS status but have been used as probiotics.24Zawistowska-Rojek A, Tyski S. Are Probiotic Really Safe for Humans? Pol J Microbiol. 2018;67(3):251-258. doi: 10.21307/pjm-2018-044. PMID: 30451441; PMCID: PMC7256845. Are Probiotic Really Safe for Humans? – PMC (nih.gov)
These are live organisms and there have been reports of fungemia, bacteremia, sepsis and endocarditis from specific strains like Lactobacillus, Streptococcus, Bacillus, and Bifidobacterium.25Doron S, Snydman DR. Risk and safety of probiotics. Clin Infect Dis. 2015 May 15;60 Suppl 2(Suppl 2):S129-34. doi: 10.1093/cid/civ085. PMID: 25922398; PMCID: PMC4490230. Risk and Safety of Probiotics – PMC (nih.gov)
Keep in mind that there are several forms of the Lactobacilli strains, and I did not list all strains in detail.
Please make sure you discuss your option with your veterinarian before starting anything new in your furbabies life.
