Can dogs have molasses? Yes! But are you feeding the right one? Keep reading this post to see what varieties of molasses your dog can have. In fact, some yummy treats on the market that contain molasses for dogs, include items like this peanut butter and banana cookie

There is even a supplement on the market that contains corn syrup and cane molasses for dogs. This gel can be used for extra calories and vitamins, as a weight gainer, or for picky eaters
DIFFERENT TYPES OF MOLASSES
So now that we know dogs can eat molasses lets talk about the several varieties of molasses on the market from unsulphured to blackstrap, light, dark and even sorghum molasses all might be ones you see.
SORGHUM MOLASSES FOR DOGS
For example, sorghum molasses is made from the stalks of the sorghum plant and this type of molasses contains about 21 grams of sugars per ounce.1Sorghum Molasses: A Tradition Worth Preserving – American Sorghum 2FoodData Central (usda.gov) In fact, sorghum can actually be found in dog foods like one of my favorite dry kibble brands
now keep in mind that sorghum is actually a cereal grain so different parts of the plants are being used and they are being processed differently when it comes to sorghum in dog food versus sorghum molasses.
UNSULPHURED VS. SULPHURED MOLASSES FOR DOGS
Do you know which one your furbaby is eating? The difference between the two is that one uses chemicals and one does not when being made. If green unripe sugar cane is used then the product will have sulphur dioxide added to it.3Blackstrap vs. Dark vs. Light Molasses: What’s the Difference? (tasteofhome.com) This means that the molasses is now sulphured and unsulphured molasses doesn’t have the sulphur dioxide added to it.
BLACKSTRAP MOLASSES FOR DOGS
This is in my opinion the best kind of molasses. There is also light and dark molasses. The lighter the molasses in color the sweeter it will be. Blackstrap molasses is the very last in processing and is usually the third boil in the refining process and thus the least sweet.4Baking with molasses | King Arthur Baking
In fact, if you’re doing some home treat baking for your furbaby, this type of molasses only contains 15 grams in sugars per ounce, Unsulphured Organic Molasses is my choice out of all the molasses’ out there
