D-MANNOSE FOR DOGS

WHAT IS D-MANNOSE FOR DOGS

D-mannose for dogs is a simple sugar found in many plants and fruits. It can be found in cranberry, peaches, apples and even in coffee. You should always check and see what source your d-mannose for dogs comes from.

This D-mannose for dogs product is sourced from corn, like most of the products on the market.

There are different opinions on d-mannose and some companies claim that it doesn’t affect your dog’s blood sugar as it is not metabolized by the human body.1Scaglione, F., Musazzi, U. M., & Minghetti, P. (2021). Considerations on D-mannose Mechanism of Action and Consequent Classification of Marketed Healthcare Products. Frontiers in pharmacology, 12, 636377. https://doi.org/10.3389/fphar.2021.636377

The reality is that d-mannose is related to glucose so you should still be cautious especially if your furbaby has any diabetic issues you should be even more cautious with this supplement.

Regardless of any issues or not you should consult your veterinarian before use and monitor your furbaby during use.

I like to use these urine test strips

Even if I’m not using d-mannose for dogs, I like to check her urine periodically to see her pH, specific gravity, leucocytes. Which let me know if she has a UTI or not.

HOW IS D-MANNOSE FOR DOGS USED

D-mannose for dogs is most often used to help furbabies with urinary tract infections (UTI) or to prevent them. The sugars try to collect the bacteria that is present and prevent them from sticking to the bladder walls which is then excreted during urination.2Sharma V, Ichikawa M, Freeze HH. Mannose metabolism: more than meets the eye. Biochem Biophys Res Commun. 2014 Oct 17;453(2):220-8. doi: 10.1016/j.bbrc.2014.06.021. Epub 2014 Jun 12. PMID: 24931670; PMCID: PMC4252654. It has been found to be an effective treatment for UTI’s.3 Domenici, L., Monti, M., Bracchi, C., Giorgini, M., Colagiovanni, V., Muzii, L., & Benedetti Panici, P. (2016). HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOUR DOG HAS A UTI

If you suspect your dog has a UTI you might notice symptoms like;

  • Excessive licking of the private area
  • Squatting funny
  • Excessive urination
  • Straining to urinate
  • Having accidents in unusual places

Some of these symptoms could signify other issues and not necessarily be a urinary tract infection such as stones or crystals. So it is best to be sure and take your furbaby to the vet for an exam before it turns into something mor serious and this way they will run a urinalysis on your dog which can tell them if your dog has a UTI, what strain of bacteria it is, if there are any crystals or stones present, etc.

And anything else they might deem necessary based upon what they might suspect based upon symptoms or based upon what they find in the urinalysis.
