DOG TICKS

WHERE ARE DOG TICKS FOUND

Sigh…Did you find a tick bite on a dog? Don’t think that just because you live in a tract home in a suburban neighborhood that dog ticks only live in the wilderness. Wrong! Dog ticks like brush and moist areas with shade.

If you are walking by some tall grass or a bush and you or your furbaby brush up against it, then you could end up with a tick crawling on you or your furbaby.

WHAT DISEASES DO DOG TICKS CARRY

Ticks or a tick bite on a dog can carry a host of diseases and some of the most common can include; 1Diseases Transmitted by Ticks | Ticks | CDC

  • Anaplasmosis
  • Lyme disease
  • Ehrlichiosis
  • Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever
  • Babesiosis

HOW TO REMOVE A TICK BITE ON A DOG

If you find a tick bite on a dog, you could remove them yourself with tweezers like these

Amazon.com: TickEase Dual-Tipped Tick Remover Tool, Tick Tweezers for Humans & Pets, First Aid Tweezers with Magnifier & Tick Testing Instructions : Pet Supplies

or bring your dog into the vet and have them remove it for you. You will want to pull straight upward to be sure not to leave any pieces of the tick burrowed under the skin as the head could break off an get stuck.

If you want to save the tick to bring into your vet then you should put it in some sort of airtight container in rubbing alcohol or  if you don’t want to save it then just flush it down the toilet.

If you take your tick to the vet you can also ask your veterinarian about a snap test for your furbaby which is a little blood test that gives almost instant results to check for tickborne diseases.

Now, they could give a false negative on the test because its too soon depending on how long you wait from noticing the tick to bringing them into the vet.

So you should check back with your vet again in 6 months and maybe even a year after the bite just to be sure no tickborne diseases were transmitted or if they are found they can be treated as soon as possible rather than later.

For example, if your dog ends up getting Lyme disease from a tick bite and it goes unchecked the progression of Lyme disease could eventually lead to kidney failure as well as other issues.

HOW TO GET RID OF YARD DOG TICKS WITH CHEMICALS

If you are looking for a less then all-natural approach to making sure you rid your yard of specific bugs like ticks there are options out there like I have this I used

Amazon.com: Black Flag Flea and Tick Killer Concentrate Yard Treatment, 32 Ounces, Ready To Spray, Quickflip Hose End Sprayer : Patio, Lawn & Garden

and surprisingly this doesn’t smell at all like the one I have listed below that is peppermint and eugenol as that gives off a very strong scent.

HOW TO GET RID OF DOG TICKS NATURALLY

Keeping your yard clean and free of fallen branches and leaves and tall grass. Don’t leave piles of debris as these can become moist and humid and are very favorable environments to ticks.

If you have bushes around your property or are just worried in general then an all-natural way to get rid of ticks and fleas is diatomaceous earth. I use this

Amazon.com: HARRIS Diatomaceous Earth Food Grade, 4lb with Powder Duster Included in The Bag : Health & Household

inside my house and I make sure to get food-grade which is supposed to be non-toxic to pets. It is made of fossilized diatoms or basically algae and the way that it works is by drying out its hosts preventing them from retaining moisture which in turn prevents them from receiving oxygen.

You will want to make sure your area you will use it is not damp and don’t turn your sprinklers on either for awhile. When I did this there was so much powder all over the air and I could feel it as I breathed in so make sure to keep your pets away while you are doing it and next time I am wearing a mask for sure!

Another option that I have used is

Amazon.com: Vet’s Best Flea and Tick Yard & Kennel Spray – Dog Flea Spray that Kills Fleas, Mosquitoes, & Ticks – Plant-Based Ingredients – Plant Safe Ready-to-Use Hose Attachment – 32 oz : Everything Else

and this is a yard spray that you attach to the hose and contains essential oils which are for fleas, ticks, mosquitos, flea larvae and flea eggs. The essential oils they use are peppermint oil and eugenol which comes from clove.

WHAT CAN HAPPEN IF YOU LEAVE TICKS ON YOUR DOG

If you find a tick on your dog, you may not even realize it is a tick. You could think it’s a pimple or wart but look closer. The bigger it is the longer it has been attached and the more engorged with your furbaby’s blood it is.

Normally when a tick is full they fall off on their own and complete their life stage and this is bad because once they fall off they could end up laying more eggs and then you will have more ticks in the area.

Ticks also carry Lyme disease and it has been said that it takes about 36-48 hours for the bacteria to be transmitted.

CAN YOUR DOG GIVE TICKS TO YOU OR OTHER ANIMALS

Yes, ticks don’t care whether you have fur or are a human and once they fall off or lay eggs then there will be more of them and they can spread in your household to you and other pets.

The best method is prevention and you can control ticks in the yard as well as on your dog with preventatives such as

Amazon.com : FRONTLINE Plus Flea and Tick Treatment for Large Dogs Up to 45 to 88 lbs., 3 Treatments : Pet Flea And Tick Repellents : Pet Supplies

which is applied once a month in between the dog’s shoulder blades.

Or if you prefer a more natural approach to your furbaby’s flea and tick control there is

Amazon.com : Wondercide – Flea, Tick & Mosquito Spray for Dogs, Cats, and Home – Flea and Tick Killer, Control, Prevention, Treatment – with Natural Essential Oils – Pet and Family Safe – Lemongrass 16 oz : Pet Supplies

which comes in different scents like cedarwood, rosemary and peppermint but it has to be sprayed thoroughly all over the dog (caution around the head) and it has to be done about every 2 days to remain effective.

If that sounds like to much for you then there is another option from wondercide which is also all natural flea and tick repellant with essential oils which is said to lasts up to 4 months simply by just putting it on like a flea collar.

Amazon.com : Wondercide – Flea and Tick Dog Collar – Flea, Tick, and Mosquito Repellent, Prevention for Dogs – with Natural Essential Oils – Pet and Family Safe – Up to 4 Months Protection : Pet Supplies

which is like a flea collar and states it last for up to 4 months. So there are plenty of options out there to suit your specific needs and tastes.
