WHAT IS GLANDULAR THERAPY FOR DOGS
Glands can be organs or animal tissues which secrete chemical substances and can be used to support other organs in the body.
Glandular therapy for dogs can be administered in their raw form or there are extracts or desiccated or dried forms.
You probably already use some form of glandular therapy in yours or your dog’s life and don’t even realize it.
Maybe you have a raw diet you feed your dog or homecooked diet where you add livers or hearts or maybe even your kibble has whole fish or certain organs added to it.
BENEFITS OF GLANDULAR THERAPY FOR DOGS AND BENEFITS OF RAW ORGANS FOR DOGS
HYPOTHYROIDISM AND GLANDULAR THERAPY FOR DOGS
“The principle of similars (treat likes by likes) is generally considered to be one of the pillars of the homeopathic doctrine established by Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843).” 1Schmidt J. M. (2010). Samuel Hahnemann und das Ahnlichkeitsprinzip [Samuel Hahnemann and the principle of similars]. Medizin, Gesellschaft, und Geschichte : Jahrbuch des Instituts fur Geschichte der Medizin der Robert Bosch Stiftung, 29, 151–184. [Samuel Hahnemann and the principle of similars] – PubMed (nih.gov)
In an earlier article I talked about hypothyroidism and how instead of taking a synthetic replacement you could opt for something a bit more natural like glandular therapy for dogs.
The idea is that if you are hypothyroid your thyroid gland may not be performing to its full potential and that is where glandular therapy for dogs comes in.
There are companies like Nature-throid that produce porcine glandular made from pig thyroid.
By using the same organ to support the dog’s organ that is not functioning to its full potential the concept is that “like treats like” and the glandular therapy for dogs will potentially provide the missing pieces offering support and strengthening the area where your dog’s organ is lacking.
In the case of natural thyroid like Nature-throid, natural thyroid contains naturally occurring T3 and T4.
PANCREAS
Another example is EPI or exocrine pancreatic insufficiency which is where your dog’s pancreas is missing specific digestive enzymes and could be brought on by pancreatitis.
Some veterinarians recommend glandular therapy for dogs by actually feeding raw or desiccated pancreas to support the missing enzymes.
STOMACH
Tripe is also thought of in glandular therapy for dogs by supporting stomach issues such as gastritis.
In one study where they used lamb tripe extract in combination with B12 it was found to reduce the risk of gastric cancer and can actually reverse intestinal metaplasia and atrophy. 2Wu, S. R., Liu, J., Zhang, L. F., Wang, N., Zhang, L. Y., Wu, Q., Liu, J. Y., & Shi, Y. Q. (2021). Lamb’s tripe extract and vitamin B12 capsule plus celecoxib reverses intestinal metaplasia and atrophy: A retrospective cohort study. World journal of clinical cases, 9(34), 10472–10483. https://doi.org/10.12998/wjcc.v9.i34.10472 Lamb’s tripe extract and vitamin B12 capsule plus celecoxib reverses intestinal metaplasia and atrophy: A retrospective cohort study (wjgnet.com)
They used the fourth tripe of a lamb which
“contains many active substances, such as renin, pepsin, mucin, and bifidus factor. It has been proven to promote the growth and propagation of bifidobacteria.” 3Wu, S. R., Liu, J., Zhang, L. F., Wang, N., Zhang, L. Y., Wu, Q., Liu, J. Y., & Shi, Y. Q. (2021). Lamb’s tripe extract and vitamin B12 capsule plus celecoxib reverses intestinal metaplasia and atrophy: A retrospective cohort study. Bifidobacteria are the good bacteria that live in your intestines.
KIDNEYS
Eating kidneys may be beneficial to your kidney health. Organ meat such as kidney contains CoQ10. CoQ10 contains ubiquinone which exerts antioxidative functions.
In those with chronic kidney disease the leading cause of death is cardiovascular disease. 4Xu, Y., Liu, J., Han, E., Wang, Y., & Gao, J. (2019). Efficacy of coenzyme Q10 in patients with chronic kidney disease: protocol for a systematic review. BMJ open, 9(5), e029053. https://doi.org/10.1136/bmjopen-2019-029053 Efficacy of coenzyme Q10 in patients with chronic kidney disease: protocol for a systematic review – PMC (nih.gov)
In a study of patients with kidney disease who were supplemented with CoQ10 it was found to help at relieving oxidative stress and reduction in adverse cardiovascular events. 5Xu, Y., Liu, J., Han, E., Wang, Y., & Gao, J.
HEART
Heart is rich in many vitamins and minerals as well. It is actually the richest source of CoQ10 from all the organ meats. It is a natural source of many B vitamins and iron without all the vitamin A that liver has.
“The health and happiness effects of consuming beef heart include strengthening and supporting one’s own heart, blood pressure regulation and mitochondria health (the energy currency.” 6Richest Source Of Natural CoQ10 Is From Beef Heart (ancestralsupplements.com)
LIVER
The notion of “like treats like” was tested in a study involving mice who were induced with fatty liver disease then treated with animal liver and bile.
The results were amazing showing that the liver and bile have a high potential to improve the induced liver condition. 7Wan, T. C., Liu, Y. T., Duann, L. T., Yu, K. H., Chen, C. M., Lin, L. C., & Sakata, R. (2014). Effects of animal liver and bile extracts on biochemical values of rat ethanol-induced fatty liver. Animal science journal = Nihon chikusan Gakkaiho, 85(1), 75–80. https://doi.org/10.1111/asj.12088
Now liver is high in B vitamins as well but it is also very high in Vitamin A so you don’t need to feed a lot or you could induce Vitamin A toxicity over time.
HOW TO CHOOSE ORGAN MEATS AND DESSICATED GLANDULAR EXTRACTS FOR DOGS
When shopping glandular therapy for dogs, I personally look for organ meats that are organic or desiccated. I also love products that come from New Zealand although the task of finding raw organ meats online that were organic or from New Zealand has proved quite daunting.
Now the problem for me is feeding raw. There are a whole host of bacteria and diseases that come from feeding raw meats.
So if you are going to do this make absolutely sure you know where your organs are coming from and how they were raised.
I am careful and prefer only New Zealand meats when supplementing like this because they have been fortunate enough to have never had an outbreak of Mad Cow Disease or Bovine spongiform encephalopathy commonly referred to as BSE.
The other issue I have, let’s say in the case of tripe, is all the nutrients that are helpful at supporting the digestive tract are lost if the tripe is cooked.
This means that in order to obtain all the beneficial digestive enzymes and other nutrients that the cow or lamb left behind for your dog to enjoy they have to be raw.
My solution to this if you can’t stomach it, (pun intended) the raw, offal (the name for internal organs), smell.
Try air dried,
My other choice for green tripe is my fur kids favorite
These are from New Zealand and made in small batches and are like little puffed popcorn kernels but sometimes you can see the gross tripe and they also have green lipid muscles which is also love.
The difference between the regular tripe at the grocery store and green tripe is that the white tripe at the grocery store has been processed and bleached to achieve that nice white coloring.
Green tripe is fresh from the animal and still has partially digested food left in the stomach and it has had minimal processing done to it.
Meaning it smells…offal, ok no more jokes.
