WHAT IS IBD IN DOGS
Inflammatory Bowel Disease in dogs or IBD in dogs is a gastrointestinal disorder that shouldn’t be confused with IBS or irritable bowel syndrome. Since these two can often have very similar symptoms it is best to get an accurate diagnosis from your veterinarian.
Typically, inflammatory bowel disease or IBD in dogs often involves inflammation of the large or small intestine or sometimes both.1Inflammatory bowel disease in the dog: Differences and similarities with humans – PMC (nih.gov) Cerquetella M, Spaterna A, Laus F, Tesei B, Rossi G, Antonelli E, Villanacci V, Bassotti G. Inflammatory bowel disease in the dog: differences and similarities with humans. World J Gastroenterol. 2010 Mar 7;16(9):1050-6. doi: 10.3748/wjg.v16.i9.1050. PMID: 20205273; PMCID: PMC2835779.
WHAT CAUSES IBD IN DOGS
Inflammatory bowel disease in dogs is suspected to be caused by a loss of tolerance to specific food antigens or bacteria.2Inflammatory bowel disease in the dog: Differences and similarities with humans – PMC (nih.gov) Cerquetella M, Spaterna A, Laus F, Tesei B, Rossi G, Antonelli E, Villanacci V, Bassotti G. Things like antibiotics or steroids can alter the intestinal flora making it more susceptible.3Treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in dogs and cats – Polish Journal of Veterinary Sciences – PAS Journals (pan.pl)
Also, things like genetics or certain diseases could also be the cause.4Early Life Modifiable Exposures and Their Association With Owner Reported Inflammatory Bowel Disease Symptoms in Adult Dogs – PMC (nih.gov) Hemida M, Vuori KA, Moore R, Anturaniemi J, Hielm-Björkman A. PMID: 33598486; PMCID: PMC7882719.
To ensure that a diagnosis of IBD in dogs is accurate there needs to be certain things ruled out such as other underlying causes ranging from parasites, allergies, foreign objects and other infections or diseases.
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF IBD IN DOGS
Usually, IBD in dogs is chronic and lasts more than 3 weeks with recurring symptoms.5Biomarkers in canine inflammatory bowel disease diagnostics – Polish Journal of Veterinary Sciences – PAS Journals (pan.pl)

HOW IS IBD DIAGNOSED IN DOGS
Usually, veterinarians will assess your pup using a CIBDAI or Canine Inflammatory Bowel Disease Activity Index which assesses the severity of the 6 most common symptoms on a point scale. They range from activity level, weight loss, stool frequency, stool consistency, appetite and vomiting.6A Scoring Index for Disease Activity in Canine Inflammatory Bowel Disease (wiley.com)
IBD in dogs is diagnosed through multiple testing factors. It is a process of elimination. Ruling out other potential causes as well. They will most likely want to run some of the below listed tests as I went through most of these with my furbaby.
- CBC
- Serum Chemistry
- Urinalysis
- Fecal
- X-rays
- Ultrasound
- Endoscopy7Treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in dogs and cats – Polish Journal of Veterinary Sciences – PAS Journals (pan.pl)

IBD TREATMENT IN DOGS
Once a diagnosis has been made and all other potential causes have been ruled out and the severity of your fur kids condition has been assessed then a treatment plan of action will be initiated. Usually, the first thing is diet modification.9Malewska, K., Rychlik, A., Nieradka, R., & Kander, M. (2011). Treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in dogs and cats. Polish journal of veterinary sciences, 14(1), 165–171. https://doi.org/10.2478/v10181-011-0026-7
This can range from hydrolyzed food, to homecooked foods to just changing the protein source to something novel like rabbit or alligator or changing both the protein and carbohydrate to something new entirely. Other options after changing the diet consist of probiotics, antibiotics or corticosteroids.10Inflammatory bowel disease in the dog: Differences and similarities with humans – PMC (nih.gov) Cerquetella M, Spaterna A, Laus F, Tesei B, Rossi G, Antonelli E, Villanacci V, Bassotti G. Inflammatory bowel disease in the dog: differences and similarities with humans. World J Gastroenterol. 2010 Mar 7;16(9):1050-6. doi: 10.3748/wjg.v16.i9.1050. PMID: 20205273; PMCID: PMC2835779.
NATURAL HOME REMEDIES FOR IBD IN DOGS AS COMPLEMENTARY OR ALTERNATIVES
PROBIOTICS
Probiotics are a great option for inflammatory bowel disease in dogs as they are non-pathogenic microorganisms that have the potential to help intestinal flora. They can help multiply the good bacteria in the intestines and lower the bad bacteria.11Williams N. T. (2010). Probiotics. American journal of health-system pharmacy : AJHP : official journal of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, 67(6), 449–458. https://doi.org/10.2146/ajhp090168
In fact, in one such study on IBD in dogs, VSL#3 which is a probiotic,
was used in comparison to dogs receiving only prednisone and metronidazole combination therapy and after 60 days of treatment with either probiotics or combination medication it was concluded that the probiotics actually caused a significant reduction in certain clinical symptoms that are associated with the IBD in dogs.12Rossi, G., Pengo, G., Caldin, M., Palumbo Piccionello, A., Steiner, J. M., Cohen, N. D., Jergens, A. E., & Suchodolski, J. S. (2014). Comparison of microbiological, histological, and immunomodulatory parameters in response to treatment with either combination therapy with prednisone and metronidazole or probiotic VSL#3 strains in dogs with idiopathic inflammatory bowel disease. ALOE VERA GEL
Aloe is one of the home remedies for ibd in dogs and is also considered an anti-inflammatory and has been used in cases of GERD successfully in comparison to omeprazole and ranitidine13Panahi, Y., Khedmat, H., Valizadegan, G., Mohtashami, R., & Sahebkar, A. (2015). Efficacy and safety of Aloe vera syrup for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease: a pilot randomized positive-controlled trial. Journal of traditional Chinese medicine = Chung i tsa chih ying wen pan, 35(6), 632–636. https://doi.org/10.1016/s0254-6272(15)30151-5 It has also been found to be effective in cases of IBD by providing support14Langmead, L., Makins, R. J., & Rampton, D. S. (2004). Anti-inflammatory effects of aloe vera gel in human colorectal mucosa in vitro. Alimentary pharmacology & therapeutics, 19(5), 521–527. https://doi.org/10.1111/j.1365-2036.2004.01874.x
In one such study in patients with colitis who took aloe vera juice for 4 weeks there was a reduction in clinical symptoms.15Langmead, L., Feakins, R. M., Goldthorpe, S., Holt, H., Tsironi, E., De Silva, A., Jewell, D. P., & Rampton, D. S. (2004). Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of oral aloe vera gel for active ulcerative colitis. Alimentary pharmacology & therapeutics, 19(7), 739–747. https://doi.org/10.1111/j.1365-2036.2004.01902.x
I have used
Amazon.com: Aloe Vera Juice Organic No Preservatives – 16 oz – Liquid : Health & Household
and when I needed it, I used for an 80 pound furbaby 1 oz. but I split it into 2 doses so half an ounce in the morning and the other half at night.
DIGESTIVE ENZYMES
There are specific enzymes that are able to help you break down food easier
is one such product I use. Not only does it has digestive enzymes to help you break down proteins, fats, carbs, etc. It also has probiotics and papain and bromelain to soothe pain or inflammation in the gut. In a study where patients had IBD and were taking digestive enzymes there was a reduction in abdominal pain and bloating or gas.16Spagnuolo, R., Cosco, C., Mancina, R. M., Ruggiero, G., Garieri, P., Cosco, V., & Doldo, P. (2017). Beta-glucan, inositol and digestive enzymes improve quality of life of patients with inflammatory bowel disease and irritable bowel syndrome. FRANKINCENSE
Frankincense or (Boswellia Serrata) has anti-inflammatory as well as antioxidant effects that have been shown to
“protect the intestinal epithelial barrier from inflammatory damage”17Catanzaro, D., Rancan, S., Orso, G., Dall’Acqua, S., Brun, P., Giron, M. C., Carrara, M., Castagliuolo, I., Ragazzi, E., Caparrotta, L., & Montopoli, M. (2015). Boswellia serrata Preserves Intestinal Epithelial Barrier from Oxidative and Inflammatory Damage. PloS one, 10(5), e0125375. https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0125375
In one such study on animals an administration of “34.2mg/kg/day”18Hartmann, R. M., Fillmann, H. S., Martins, M. I., Meurer, L., & Marroni, N. P. (2014). Boswellia serrata has beneficial anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties in a model of experimental colitis. Phytotherapy research : PTR, 28(9), 1392–1398. https://doi.org/10.1002/ptr.5142 of extract showed improvements in tissue injury and protective effects that inhibit inflammatory mediators of ulcerative colitis.19Hartmann, R. M., Fillmann, H. S., Martins, M. I., Meurer, L., & Marroni, N. P. (2014). Boswellia serrata has beneficial anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties in a model of experimental colitis. Phytotherapy research : PTR, 28(9), 1392–1398. https://doi.org/10.1002/ptr.5142
is non-alcohol tincture.
Talk with your veterinarian before starting anything new in your fur kids life as current medical conditions, medication or other herbs could interfere and could not be the right choice for your specific situation.
